If you plan to use your RYA practical certificate* to work on the water as a skipper or crew member, you will need to get a commercial endorsement. Whatever vessel you intend to work on, be it a sailing vessel, work boat or passenger vessel for example, under maritime law you are a professional seafarer.
One of the pre-requisites for a commercial endorsement is the Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR) certificate. The online PPR course was developed by the RYA to give people an understanding of the legislation that applies in the commercial marine environment and their obligations as a professional skipper or crew member.
None. This is an entry-level course, specifically for those people seeking a commercial endorsement on a practical RYA certificate.
Being an online course, you can work at your own pace. As a guide, the course will take approximately 6 – 8 hours to complete (including the assessment). From your initial login, you will have a maximum of 12 months to complete the course.
The course consists of 4 training modules. These are followed by a 2-part assessment at the end of the course, which takes a maximum of 2.5 hours.
Being an online course, you can complete the course from anywhere, using a suitable device (PC, Mac or tablet) with an internet connection.
Once you have completed the four course modules, there is a mock assessment to prepare you for the final graded assessment. This can be done up to three times.
The final graded assessment is split into two parts- General Knowledge and Scenarios. This takes a maximum of 2.5 hours in total and you have two attempts. On successful completion of the assessment you can download and print your PDF certificate.
There is no course handbook but you may find ‘RYA Commercial Vessels – Small Vessels (G105)‘ a useful reference.
Being an online course, you can start at any time.
Once you have contacted us to an express an interest and paid for your booking, we will provide you with login details for the RYA Interactive site.
On successful completion of the course, you will have a sound understanding of the regulations that apply to small commercial vessels in the UK, with regards to their operating procedures, equipment and manning.
Your PPR certificate (downloaded and printed off) must be sent to the RYA as part of your commercial endorsement application.
